Colin Firth was reportedly so blown away by his Oscar win that he left his trophy in the toilet. The British star won the Best Actor award for his role in The King’s Speech, and according to The Mirror, he was so stunned that he left the statue in the bathroom and a cloakroom attendant had to return it to him. This is the second time that Firth is believed to have misplaced his awards, having reportedly left his BAFTA on a bar last month. A source said that the mix-up did little to dampen the party spirit. “Everyone was trying to buy him drinks. He may be 50 but he knows how to party and was determined to make the most of the occasion,” said the onlooker.

So this year’s Academy Awards were pretty boring. Some interesting notes – “True Grit” came home without a single award despite having 10 nominations; Christopher Nolan didn’t receive any awards despite the critically-acclaimed and highly original “Inception”; Anne Hathaway poked fun at the Academy’s attempt to appeal to a younger audience by having her as the youngest host ever at 28 years old; and finally, 8-time host Billy Crystal swam through making some wish that he was back to host again. Maybe he was meant as a teaser for next year. And who could forget Melissa Leo dropping an F-bomb? No real big moments though but the little ones scattered throughout were pretty ok.

Japanese villagers in Taiji have dismissed the Oscar win for The Cove, a documentary about its dolphin whaling practices.

The film, which stars Isabel Lucas, is set in southwest Japan, where the village of 3,500 people – aka “Whale Town” – has been hunting dolphins and whales since the early 1600s, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Hisato Ryono, a local councilman who claims he was tricked into appearing in the film, said the dolphin whaling dubbed a big secret was known to all the locals. “Everyone around here knows about it. The water nearby turns red during the hunt. The actual killing is done in a concealed area because it is unpleasant to look at, as is true of killing cows or pigs or any other animal.

“This is a close-knit group of fishermen. The more they feel squeezed, the more they will close off to outsiders. They won’t stop this hunt because of such pressure.”

Oscars hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin had the celebrity-packed audience laughing out loud – even though most of their gags were aimed at the stars themselves.

A glaring George Clooney seemed to be off-limits – but only as part of a joke that they were too scared to make fun of him.

Baldwin and Martin began by goading Best Actress nominee Meryl Streep. Martin said: “She holds the record for most nominations by an actress. Or as I like to think of it, most losses.”

He added: “Everyone who has worked with that woman says the same thing – can that woman act and what’s with all the Nazi memorabilia?”

They turned then to Helen Mirren, with Martin saying: “Look! There’s that damn Helen Mirren!”

Baldwin corrected him: “Steve, that’s Dame Helen Mirren.”

Then it was Avatar director James Cameron’s turn to be the butt of a joke as the hosts put on 3D glasses and asked: “Is that the director of Avatar, James Cameron?”

Martin added: “It’s an amazing fact that James Cameron used to be married to the director of another nominated film The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow.” Baldwin chipped in: “She was so pleased to be nominated with him she sent him a beautiful gift basket with a timer.”

Martin, poking fun at the recent safety recall by car manufacturer Toyota, added: “And he reciprocated by sending her a Toyota.”

Both Bigelow and Cameron laughed along with the joke, just like the rest of the hosts’ targets.

Oscar favourite Sandra Bullock has reportedly ribbed fellow nominee Meryl Streep ahead of this Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony.

Bullock made her jokey comments on a TV Oscars Special that is due to air in the US on Sunday.

When asked what she will say to the Mamma Mia! Star if she wins, Bullock, who has been nominated in the Best Actress category along with the veteran Oscar-winner, joked: “I’m gonna beat the s*** out of her!”

But she quickly added: “No, I’m just kidding. Um, you know that.”

Bullock has been nominated for her role in The Blind Side, while Streep is up for a gong for her portrayal of chef Julia Child in Julie & Julia.

The online stakes for Oscar winners have narrowed so much that punters may have to part with $6 to win just $1 if Jeff Bridges takes out Best Actor for Crazy Heart.

The ABC in Australia reports George Clooney could be an upset, though, for his turn in Up In The Air with current odds set at 13-1. Slightly better. Then there is Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker at 28-1.

While the Best Actor odds may be easy to understand, it is difficult to imagine how anyone could predict the outcome for Best Picture this Sunday at the 82nd Academy Awards.

Both hot contenders, The Hurt Locker and Avatar, are neck-and-neck at nine nominations each. Their respective directors, Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron, even once shared the same bed.

John Mayer attended the 2009 Oscars with his girlfriend Jennifer Aniston this past Sunday. The singer revealed on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show that he was very nervous before that. John also talked about how he doesn’t really fit in on the red carpet and on growing up a little. It was a bit funny that he admitted to being star struck and asking Jen to introduce him saying ““[I asked Jen,] ‘Will you please introduce me to so-and-so?’ It was really, really fun.” He also said why he and Jen decided to make the Oscars their first major public event together saying “At some point, you feel comfortable and say this is the choice I want to make. I think a year is a pretty good period of time with which to say, ‘Let’s go have a really good time at the Oscars!’”

Power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie may have gone home empty handed during this season’s various Award-giving ceremonies the latest of which is the Oscars Awards held last Sunday but life goes on. Brad Pitt was nominated as Best Actor for the “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” while Angelina Jolie was nominated as Best Actress for “The Changeling”. A few days after the Oscars, the couple was seen with four of their six children in a New York City theater to watch The Little Mermaid.

The whole family was off to Broadway last Wednesday to see the children’s favorite play which is also the favorite of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter Suri Cruise. Brad Pitt was seen carrying 2-year old daughter Shiloh while holding the hand of 5-year old Pax while entering the Lunt-Fontanne Theater. Angelina Jolie, on the other hand, held 3-year old Zahara while 7-year old Maddox walked in front of them. The newborn twins Vivienne and Knox who are already seven months old were however a no-show. This could be the last family outing because Angelina Jolie is set to start filming the spy-thriller Salt.

The Academy Award winning actress’ children, Sam and Mia, are very excited about their mother bringing home the award she won this week-end. Kate Winslet said this about their excitement: “My kids are waiting for me to bring home an Oscar. It’s great because with my husband’s Oscar we now have a pair. They love playing with my awards and this means they get to hold one each. I might just try and hang on to it for a while myself though.” Imagine that! A pair of Oscars… maybe they will have little Oscar children and Kate Winslet can say they are prizes too.

The 81st Academy or Oscars Awards wouldn’t be as exciting without quotable (READ: UNFORGETTABLE) quotes from both nominees and guests, even the hosts. Last Sunday’s Oscars Awards was not an exemption as the red carpet and the stage yielded a lot of quotes to remember. Who can forget the statement “Has anybody ever fainted here? Because I might be the first one” from Best Supporting Actress winner Penelope Cruz? And how about Best Actress winner Kate Winslet’s segue to that when she said that Penelope Cruz might be right about that fainting thing. That was not the only quotable quote from Kate Winslet though because she also had the audience at the palm of her hand when she said “I’d be lying if I haven’t made a version of this speech before. I think I was probably eight years old and staring into the bathroom mirror and this would have been a shampoo bottle. Well it’s not a shampoo bottle now.”

Best Actor Winner Sean Penn started his speech with “You commie homo-loving sons of guns”. He repeated that too near the end of his speech while further criticizing those who continuously oppose gay marriages including US President Barack Obama. And one statement that elicited laughter from the crowd, which has surely left its mark in this year’s Oscar’s is the one made by Simon Beaufoy when he received his best adapted screen play award for Slumdog Millionaire “There are certain places you never imagine standing – the moon, the South Pole, the Miss World podium and here.” Dustin Lance Black’s “If Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he’d want me to say to all those gay and lesbian kids out there tonight – who have been told that they are less than by their churches, by the government, or by their families – that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures that are valued.” also left an indelible mark among the audience both in the Kodak Theater and in their own homes.

Hot momma Angelina Jolie may be nonchalant about her Oscar Best Actress nomination for the movie Changeling but she is definitely preparing for the big night. Not wanting to be outdone by partner Brad Pitt’s ex-wife Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie is rumored to be driving all of New York’s high-end jewelers crazy looking for a $20 million necklace that the actress can wear to the Oscars. The aim here is of course to outshine not only Aniston but the other nominees as well.

What is it with women and jewelry? Angelina Jolie’s determination to be flashy and to look great is however understandable that this is really her moment to shine. She has already won an Oscars for Best Supporting Actress for the movie Girl Interrupted but her chances of winning in this year’s Academy Awards is so nil due to a lot of great performances by actresses Kate Winslet and Meryl Streep that a $20 million glittering necklace would at least keep her shining when she fails to hear her name mentioned for the category. In any case, she wants to look gorgeous when her man Brad Pitt does get the statuette for Best Actor for the movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”.
