Emily Mortimer didn’t impress Martin Scorsese with her choice of birthday card
Actress Emily Mortimer said she didn’t impress director Martin Scorsese with her choice of birthday card. The 39-year-old actress is starring in Scorsese’s new movie Hugo Cabret and recalled a moment during filming when she forgot to buy the filmmaker a birthday card. She remembered she had bought a Catherine Tate card featuring Tate’s Nan character for her nephew and decided to give it to the moviemaker instead. According to UK newspaper Daily Express, she said: "It was five o’clock in the morning and we were about to start the day and I thought: ‘This is the most brilliant thing. I’m going to give him this and it’ll be better than all the most expensive presents because he’ll see the charm of the British sense of humour.’ "I was saying to Sacha [co-star - Baron-Cohen]: ‘Do you think this is a good thing?’ And he was a bit like: ‘No, I don’t think you should.’ I was thinking he was jealous." She added: "As Scorsese opened it I could see his little face fall. He’s a classy guy, very refined, and there was this old granny with wee on her knickers. "I could see him trying to be nice but it was just awful and I couldn’t look him in the eye ever again."
