Oprah Winfrey introduces her secret sister
Oprah Winfrey has introduced the world to the sister she never knew existed. The chat show queen turned the cameras on herself as she opened up about the bombshell family secret that was kept hidden for 47 years. “I thought nothing could surprise me anymore but let me tell you, I was wrong,” Winfrey said. Winfrey, 56, revealed she was nine-years-old and living with her father in Tennessee when her mother, Vernita Lee, became pregnant with a daughter, Patricia, who was given up for adoption. “It’s a bombshell family secret that left me speechless,” Oprah told her stunned audience. “Only a handful of people in my life know about this.” Oprah said she chose to tell the world about her secret sister, as she was certain the secret would eventually get out. “I wanted you to hear it from me first,” Oprah said. Patricia’s surname was not made public by the show. Winfrey revealed she learned of her existence in October and met her sister for the first time late last year on the US Thanksgiving holiday November 25. They held another emotional reunion for cameras on the latest episode of her US show. Born in 1963 in Milwaukee, Patricia lived in a series of foster homes until the age of seven. She was adopted but called her childhood ‘difficult’. Patricia told cameras she had spent years attempting to trace her roots until she finally discovered who her mother and her half-sister were in 2007. But when she contacted her mother Vernita Lee through an adoption agency, Lee refused to meet her. “I was put up for adoption at birth, and I was left in the hospital for about a month,” Patricia said. For the next seven years of her life Patricia said she bounced around from one foster home to another before finally being adopted.
