American TV viewers got a sneak peek at the new Spider-Man musical the most expensive in Broadway history. A television commercial for the $65million USD show, Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, shows Reeve Carney in the role of the webslinger. He can be seen sharing a kiss with love interest Mary Jane, whose role is played by actress Natalie Mendoza. Behind the scenes, U2 rockers Bono and The Edge, who wrote the music for the show, are seen along with director Julie Taymor. The show, which had its preview in New York on Sunday night [November 28], has been plagued by delays in bringing it to the stage. It comes as the show was dubbed an ‘epic flop’ by one theatre reviewer. The New York Post’s Michael Riedel, who has long been critical of the production, wrote: “Not even Spider-Man could avert this disaster.” He told how the preview was interrupted by technical problems as cast members swung from the rafters, and claimed audience members were left ‘scratching their heads over the confusing plot’. The show will open in 2011 at the Foxwoods Theatre on West 42nd St.
