Rip Torn banking on probation programme to settle criminal charges
Actor Rip Torn is hoping a special probation programme will settle criminal charges over his breaking into a bank while drunk and armed with a loaded gun, according to reports.
The 79-year-old Men In Black star was charged with smashing a window to get into the Connecticut bank while intoxicated, and carrying the weapon on 29 January.
He claimed he thought the Litchfield Bankcorp building was his own home, according to the New York Post.
The programme – used for first-time, non-violent offenders – erases charges after a two-year probation period.
Last month, the state agreed to drop a felony burglary charge against the Larry Sanders Show star as there was no evidence he intended to commit a crime.
But he still faces charged of third-degree criminal mischief, first-degree criminal trespass, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and possession of a pistol or revolver without a permit, according to reports.
Prosecutors are opposing the probation application.
Torn’s lawyer says he completed an alcohol-rehabilitation programme and got rid of his weapons.
