Mad Men star Jon Hamm has said he can’t see himself marrying – despite being in a long-term relationship.

The 39-year-old actor told Parade magazine that his girlfriend of 13 years – actress Jennifer Westfeldt – is the love of his life, but that he doesn’t think they will be walking down the aisle anytime soon.

He said: “I don’t have the marriage chip, and neither of us have the greatest examples of marriages in our families. But Jen is the love of my life, and we’ve already been together four times longer than my parents were married.”

Hamm, who plays womanising ad exec Don Draper in the hit AMC show, also said he was not ready to have children.

He said: “I like kids. But I also like the option to close the door. Becoming a parent is a whole other life, and it doesn’t stop.”

The handsome actor and TV star grew up in St Louis, Missouri, and his parents divorced when he was two. His mother, Deborah, raised him alone. After she died of cancer, when he was 10, he moved in with his father, Dan – who later died when Hamm was just 20.

The former Division star told the US entertainment magazine that his father’s “smoking, drinking and hard-living ways are pretty much the model for [Mad Men's] Don Draper”.

He added: “Losing both parents at a young age gave me a sense that you can’t really control life – so you’d better live it while it’s here.

“I stopped believing in a story-book existence a long time ago. All you can do is push in a direction and see what comes of it.”
