Alfred Molina planning to ‘retire’ and become an acting teacher
An Education star Alfred Molina says he plans to become an acting teacher – because he is getting too old to get offered Hollywood roles.
The 56-year-old star, who plays Carey Mulligan’s dad in the 1960s-based movie, admits he is already thinking ahead, saying it is “scary” thinking of life “as an old actor”.
“In movies, it eventually comes down to age,” he complained. “I’m now seeing young kids play ‘the Alfred Molina role’. I’ll probably end my career teaching young actors,” he said. “I do this now. I’ve taught in LA, in New York, as a guest teacher. I’m impressed by the enthusiasm of young actors.”
But he admits he is glad he escaped the pressures and temptations that face today’s young movie stars.
“When I started 35 years ago, theatre was the way in. Then you graduated to TV and movies,” he said. “It’s all different today. Scary. I wouldn’t want to be a young actor today.”
