Senator Ted Kennedy’s widow has revealed a lot of her husband’s struggle with cancer to Oprah Winfrey, but kept his dying words to herself.

“I think I’ll just keep that one to myself,” said Vicky Kennedy. Kennedy died of brain cancer at the age of 77.

Vicky said even though he was stricken with cancer, her husband put up an amazing fight to make it to the inauguration of America’s first black president, Barack Obama.

Kennedy went as far as to work out how many steps he would have to take on the day. “He was in training to be there in January. He was exercising every single day to be strong enough to be there.”

Winfrey held up a copy of Kennedy’s memoir True Compass, which was released soon after his death. The memoir has already reached 12th on the New York Times non-fiction bestsellers list.

A touching segment of Kennedy’s funeral service was included. It showed Ted Kennedy Jr., who had a leg amputated at the age of 12 from cancer, recalling in his eulogy how his father picked him up after he fell on a hill and told him that they would “climb that hill together, if it takes us all day. He just gave me so much encouragement at a very difficult time in my life. He was just such an optimistic person.”
