American Psycho character ‘inspired by Tom Cruise’
The sociopath character in American Psycho was modelled on the real-life Tom Cruise, the 2000 film’s director has revealed. Mary Harron said the idea of using Cruise as a model arose from an appearance by the actor on The Late Show with Dave Letterman.
Harron and Christian Bale had been developing the character of killer Patrick Bateman. The director said: “We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet, watching what people did and trying to work out the right way to behave.
And then one day [Bale] called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy.”
Cruise’s representatives attacked the claims, saying: “This is so far removed from who Tom Cruise is as a person, this must have been said in jest.”
