Sienna Miller has revealed that she thought a theatregoer had died during her Broadway debut.

The actress, speaking to US chat show host David Letterman, said she was convinced a punter had suffered convulsion and died during a performance of the play After Miss Julie in New York.

But the English actress, 27, decided the show must go on, and continued her starring role – not knowing the “punter” was in fact a guide dog.

Sienna, wearing black trousers and a gold-trimmed cardigan, said: “There was what I thought was a human being in the front row on the floor convulsing.

“I missed the announcement that it was a seeing-eye dog.

“I literally thought somebody was having a fit on the floor.

“I don’t think that would happen in London.

“It shook itself but it had chains on.

“I thought there’s someone there having an epileptic fit and everyone was ignoring it.

“Then it went to sleep and I thought it had passed on. It was an older audience, after all.

“I was freaked out but stayed in character.”

Talking about another potential mishap, she added: “The other day I nearly told someone who fainted to shut up.

“Suddenly there was this big commotion and it sounded like they were eating sweets out of a trash can bag.

“It’s an intense play and I wanted to say, ‘Can you just sit down please?’ but thank God I didn’t because this poor woman had fainted.
