Despair over Ledger’s death nearly shelved Parnassus, says Gilliam

Director Terry Gilliam says the death of Heath Ledger last year caused him despair and almost led him to stop production on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
At the time of Ledger’s drug overdose in New York he had completed about half his scenes in the fantasy, which features at this month’s Cannes film festival.
“We were devastated,” Gilliam says in an interview published by the Times of London online.
“We spent the whole day – Amy [his daughter, who co-produced the film], Nicola Pecorini, the director of photography, and myself — lying flat on the floor. He’s dead, and you don’t quite get over that.
“I suppose I’m in an interesting position because while I’m cutting the film I’m basically working with him every day and he’s fine; he’s in good shape.”
Gilliam says that after Ledger’s death there were lines the film-makers refused to change. “It’s like the script was prescient, which was spooky.”
