Milk is probably a film that will be looked upon in history as the vehicle that confirmed Sean Penn’s capacity as an actor. Of course, he has won an Oscar best actor for Mystic River but that was eons ago. The New York Film Critics Circle has named Penn best actor last Wednesday for the movie “Milk” which is the bio-flick of Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist who was killed in the 70s. His Milk co-actor Josh Brolin who played the assassin’s role in the movie was also named best supporting actor.

This is the second best actor plum for Penn for the same movie after the Los Angeles Film Critics Association gave him that honor last Tuesday. This makes “Milk” and Penn strong contenders in the Oscar Awards. Milk has also been nominated in the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award. Milk and Brad Pitt’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” are leading the awards pack with eight nominations each.

Critics are already comparing Penn with multi-awarded actress Meryl Streep saying the only difference is his testosterone. This could be the best compliment Penn has ever received in his entire career considering that Streep is a favorite within the awards circle and to prove that, she has been nominated for best actress for the film Doubt.
