Fairytale Censorship

We all know and love the Pogues Christmas classic ?Fairytale of New York?. It is played, along with all the other Christmas tunes, from around October onwards in shops, bars and restaurants so that come the special day we can all recite the words backwards.
But it wouldn?t be Christmas without it. However Radio One have attempted to censor the word ?faggot? from the song so that every time it is played on Radio one it is bleeped out.
The mother of late singer Kirsty MacColl, Jean, told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast: ?I think it?s pathetic, I really do. It?s absolute nonsense. Really, this is too ridiculous.?
Radio 1 has played the song uncensored for the past 20 years but a spokesman for the station explained: ?We continually review the language used in music and the impact it will have on our audience. The judgment was made by our head of music, who felt the time was right.?
Over on Radio 2, the song is still being played in its entirety.
But nobody panic; Radio One received so many complaints they have agreed that from today they will play the song without the bleeps; removing the censorship.
And a Merry Christmas to you too.
