Miss New Jersey Comes Clean, Keeps Crown

Amy Polumbo may have been out of her gourd a while back, but she’s still in the running to be Miss America. The reigning Miss New Jersey will get to keep her crown after going public with old pictures of her that were anonymously sent to pageant officials in a ploy to get Polumbo to relinquish her title, which she won only last month. If the pictures that were shown on the Today show are representative of the group of photos that Ms Polumbo was being “blackmailed” with, I have to say this situation is utterly laughable. When I first heard that Miss New Jersey was the victim of an extortion attempt, I had the impression that the photos must be very lewd indeed - something on the order of the nude photos of Vanessa Williams that were published in Penthouse magazine when she was Miss America in 1984. Imagine my surprise to learn that the photos in this case not only are not even remotely “racy,” they do not even properly qualify as “embarrassing”; these pictures can only be characterized as “unflattering,” at the very worst.
